My Story

Hello. I’m Tola Laseinde is the designer/maker behind the vibrant lampshades, homeware & gifts all made by hand from my home-studio in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, UK.

This is where my two worlds collide. My love for gorgeous interiors and vibrant African Wax Print fabrics (a.k.a. 'ankara' in Nigerian circles).

It all started from my crazy love of ankara. The popular African material used originally in making clothes for all occasions - be it for everyday, evening, wedding or party wear. It's vibrant, eye-catching, colourful and easily adaptable.

What makes these African Prints SO unique is the way the patterns & colours run and appear.

So I thought to myself one day, as you do, you know what I can do one better! With my love of interior design, I didn't want to delve away from interiors, home decor & accessories. And I have always wanted to make products myself, by hand, using these gorgeous fabrics.

And then I had a light bulb moment. LAMPSHADES!!!! Pun "so" intended.

And the rest is history!

My African inspired handcrafted lampshades are my signature & best-selling products. They seem to be gaining quite a reputation, slowly becoming a movement (in my head). I tend to seek out eye-catching African inspired design prints which may be bold, geometric, retro, tribal, botanical, mid-century modern or even  geeky too! They are certainly a quick & easy way to inject splashes of colour into your spaces.

At the moment I’m obsessed with giving my lampshades alternative linings on the inside like metallic gold or bronze as well as transparent ones too.

I love commissions, special projects, collaborations, especially partnering with interior designers /stylists, property developers, home-stagers architects. I also work with Film Sets & Stage Designers.

I am a lampshade tutor too and host lampshade making workshops.

You can find me at the world famous Greenwich Market on Sundays (not everyone though) where I have a “pop-up-shop/stall”.  I also sell in person at well curated handmade craft fairs & markets especially at the run up to Christmas.

In a nutshell I create ...

"My Detola & Geek African inspired handmade products are a quick & easy way to inject splashes of colour into your spaces. Quite functional & very trendy too. These vibrant designs always get the conversation started. Right?"
